Prostate cancer in African-American men is associated with specific changes in the IL-16 gene, in line with researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago University of Medicine.
The study, published on-line in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Protection, establishes the association connected with IL-16 with prostate cancer in men of both African and Eu descent.
This provides us with potential biomarker for prostate cancer, claims principal investigator Rick Kittles, UIC link professor of medicine in hematology/oncology.
Earlier identified changes in the gene for IL-16, an immune system protein www.uggsclassictall-5815.com, were associated with prostate cancer in men involving European descent. But the exact same changes in the genes numbered sequence -- called polymorphisms -- did not confer the same risk in Camera Americans.
Doubt was cast on IL-16s role in prostate kind of cancer when researchers were unable to make sure the IL-16 polymorphisms identified in white wines were also important risk factors within African Americans, Kittles said.
Kittles brilliant colleagues used a technique termed imputation -- a type of statistical extrapolation -- that ensured that they see new patterns of association and identify completely new places in the gene to look for polymorphisms. They found changes elsewhere inside the IL-16 gene that were associated with prostate cancer understanding that were unique to Photography equipment Americans.
Polymorphisms result from DNA variations and emerge in the our ancestors history of different populations. People of African descent are much more genetically diverse than whites, Kittles said, making the search for polymorphisms regarding disease more difficult.
Although the influence of the particular changes towards the gene appear to be different in men regarding African versus European lineage UGG Classic Cardy, it is likely that several of the polymorphisms in the gene alter the function of the IL-16 protein.
This confirms the importance of IL-16 throughout prostate cancer and leads people in a new direction, Kittles reported. Very little research has been done on IL-16, so not much is well known about it.
We now need to explore the functional role of IL-16 to grasp the role it is playing inside prostate cancer, he said.
